EDI Statement

At the Kazak Lab we try our best to make science a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive space. We present here our lab statement on EDI which we developed in a process of consultation as a group. If you have thoughts on how we can improve the principles/plans we express here, feel free to share them with us.

Land Acknowledgement

The Kazak lab at McGill University acknowledges that we reside on unceded Indigenous lands, specifically the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá Nation. As individuals who have the privilege of living and working here, we recognize our responsibility to honor and understand the enduring history of Indigenous peoples on this land.

Mission Statement

Our lab aims to deepen our knowledge of cellular metabolism and physiology while mentoring the next generation of researchers. We believe optimal progress occurs when individuals from diverse backgrounds unite in a respectful, curious, and stimulating environment.

Why is this important to us as a lab?

We believe that:

  • The values of equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to building a healthy community.
  • More richly diverse environments prompt stimulating conversations and open-mindedness, both of which are key to creativity, productivity and well-being in a team.
  • Science thrives when a diversity of voices and minds are brought to bear on challenging questions.

What does this mean for us?

  • We acknowledge that discrimination can stem from various factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and more.
  • We understand that differences in opportunities (such as socioeconomic status, family connections, familial responsibilities, etc.) can lead to disparities that are unrelated to an individual’s potential to contribute meaningfully to the lab.
  • Our commitment lies in comprehending and eradicating these biases within our lab.
  • We recognize that this is an ongoing learning journey for us, and we invite further dialogue on how we can enhance our efforts.
